Real estate investment in Rwanda is a booming business, due to large scale infrastructural development projects that has been by fueled by population growth. An emergence of rapid growth of middle class residents has further led to the high demand of rental units (over 16,000 units in Kigali alone between 2013 & 2020).
This sector has led to the growth of Rwandan GDP by 7% and grew itself by almost 10% within 5 years . These figures have led investors to ramp up initial investments of $100million to just under half a billion Dollars. However, the action isn’t confined to the capital alone. The government has selected 6 additional locations as secondary cities, to accommodate much of the surplus socio-economic & urban growth that Kigali is enjoying. These places are Rusizi, Rubavu, Musanze, Huye, Muhanga & Nyagatare.
The expanding interest in the country’s real estate economy can be further exemplified by 15 companies from Luxembourg that attended the first ever Rwanda-Luxembourg Business Forum which was organized by the Rwanda Development Board as well as the Luxembourg Chamber of Commerce in Kigali. The event was held at the Marriott Kigali and hosted over 1000 public/private sector participants from both countries.
Furthermore, the government has stated that it will collaborate with investors to build publically affordable housing, by setting aside acres of land to enable contractors to keep expenditure to a minimum. The city of Kigali alone has already allocated 10 hectares of land to potential real estate investors for future affordable housing projects.
What’s even more laudable is the Kigali Innovation City that is being built in the capital. Tagged as Africa’s premier Silicone Valley, the 70 hectare establishment will be home world class universities, technology companies, biotech firms, retailers as well as residences. The completion of the project will position Rwanda as a globally-competitive knowledge-based economy. It makes investing in real estate a no-brainer.
As realistic sector goes further, Rwanda Association of Real Estate Brokers (RWAREB) was launched in 2018 as umbrella institution of real estate agency, brokerage companies, sales persons professionals in Rwanda and other organization that have key interest in real estate and brokerage service delivery.
